Attention Hospice Supporters and Thrift Shoppers:

Hospice East Bay and the Hospice Thrift Shoppes want to thank you for your ongoing support during this coronavirus outbreak. The Hospice Thrift Shoppes will be closed until authorities announce it is safe to reopen. However, Hospice East Bay continues to serve patients in our community throughout this pandemic, thanks to YOU.

Here are a few ways you can help support hospice patients during this time:

1. If you are sheltering in place, and using this time to catch up on spring cleaning, consider putting together a bag of donated items for our thrift shoppes and bringing them in once the shelter order has been lifted.

2. Visit our donations page to see the many different ways you can help support hospice patients and their families.

Thank you again for your continued support!

Wills & Bequests

The most common method of planned giving is to make a bequest through your will. There are three types of bequests for you to consider: specific gifts, residual or “percentage of the estate” gifts, or contingent gifts.

Specific gifts are dollar amounts or tangible property which you specifically want Hospice East Bay to receive from your estate. (sample language)

Residual or percentage gifts are distributed after specific gifts (to relatives or friends for example) have been allocated. You can designate that the remainder of your estate, or a percentage of the remainder, be given to Hospice East Bay. (sample language)

Contingent gifts occur when one or more of the beneficiaries in the will are no longer alive to receive their gift from the estate. (sample language)

Donor Designations

You can designate all or part of your retirement plan, IRA, or insurance policy, to be donated to Hospice East Bay. These gifts are easy to execute and do not require changing your will. Simply name Hospice East Bay as a beneficiary of your plan or policy.

Charitable Annuities

A charitable annuity is a contract between you and a third party, usually an insurance company. Purchasing an annuity contract enables you to receive a yearly income and an immediate tax deduction. At the end of the contract, Hospice East Bay receives the remainder of the annuity.

Charitable Trusts

A charitable trust allows you to minimize your taxes on appreciated assets while creating a steady stream of income. With a charitable remainder trust, your designated beneficiaries receive the income, while Hospice East Bay receives the remainder. With a charitable lead trust, Hospice East Bay receives the income, while your designated beneficiaries receive the remainder.

Thomas J. Long Foundation

Hospice East Bay is excited to announce a 3-year grant from the Thomas J. Long Foundation enabling us to fund projects that benefit caregivers, patients, and regional non-profit hospice agencies.

Respite for caregiving family members provides a much-needed, temporary break from the often exhausting challenges they face. The “Give Me A Break” program provides funds for caregiver respite to families unable to pay for this care on their own. We will launch this program January 1, 2017.

Our Music & Memory program has enjoyed great success in its first year, bringing personalized music into the lives of those with life-limiting illnesses. The grant will allow us to expand our current program and hire a full-time music therapist to address complex medical symptoms that lie beyond the scope of the Music & Memory program.

Finally, we will strengthen our regional, community-based hospice organizations by engaging consultative services to create strategies for collaboration and growth.

Thank you Thomas J. Long Foundation for your transformational support!
