Hospice East Bay is a not-for-profit organization that provides care for patients and families facing serious illness. Many people wonder how these services are paid for. Below is a simple guide to the different ways our care is covered.
Hospice Care
Most hospice services are covered by:
- Medicare
- Medi-Cal (Medicaid in other states)
- Private insurance
These programs usually pay for medical care, medications, and equipment related to the terminal illness. If a patient does not have insurance or is struggling financially, charitable donations, grants, and fundraising help cover the costs. No one is turned away because they can’t pay.
Palliative Care
Palliative care is specialized medical care that helps manage symptoms for people with serious illnesses.
- Many insurance plans cover all or most of the costs.
- Some services, like doctor or nurse practitioner visits, may have a co-pay.
- Some insurance plans also cover extra care from nurses (RN) and social workers (MSW).
- Patients pay a small monthly fee for spiritual care and volunteer support.
Financial assistance is available for those who qualify. If you’re unsure what your insurance covers, call us, and we can help check your benefits.
Bruns House (Inpatient Hospice Care)
Bruns House provides short-term care for patients who need extra help managing serious symptoms.
- Medicare and Medi-Cal cover the cost of inpatient care when it is medically necessary.
- Private insurance and HMOs may also cover costs, but some co-pays or deductibles may apply.
- Patients who want to stay at Bruns House for routine hospice care (not urgent symptom management) can pay privately for their stay.
